The 2006 Craft & Hobby Association Attitude & Usage Study shows that the U.S. craft and hobby industry achieved $30.2 billion in annual retail sales, with 57 percent of U.S. households (62 million) participating in crafts last year. Annual average spending per household is $476.
Top-selling categories, in order, were scrapbooking/memory crafts, home décor/painting/accessorizing/finishing, art & drawing, other painting & finishing, floral arranging, beading/bead crafts, card making, woodworking, crocheting, and apparel/fashion sewing.
Discount stores accounted for 29 percent of sales ($8.632 billion) and craft chains accounted for 27 percent ($8.113 billion). Sales are highest during winter months of December, January, and February, with March being the slowest sales period.
Most purchases are made on impulse, with unadvertised in-store sales credited with encouraging these purchases. Only 14 percent of crafters said they always have a specific purchase in mind when craft shopping.
