* ”Best Buy”. Consumers Digest placed Bernina’s artista 730E at the top of its “Best Buys in Sewing Machines.”
* Warning. The Craft & Hobby Association is alerting members to a mailing they may receive from Construct Data Verlag, an Austrian-based company that publishes an online directory called the Fair Guide, among other European-based directories. Signing the form from Construct Data enters the signer into a contract that commits to an annual fee of $981 for three years to appear in an online listing. The contract will automatically renew for a fourth year if a registered letter terminating the commitment is not sent prior to the final three-month period of the last year. CHA does not provide Construct Data with member information and does not endorse the Fair Guide. * Award. Michael James is the recipient of the 2007 Silver Star Award, given annually to living persons who have made a lasting and positive impact on the field of quilting and textile art over their careers. James, a member of the Quilter’s Hall of Fame, was chosen for a lifetime of work that has seen him move through different styles and techniques, but always remain on the cutting edge of quilt design, construction, and scholarship. James is an author, teacher, and lecturer, and is department chair in Textiles, Clothing & Design at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln, and a Faculty Fellow at the International Quilt Study Center. The award will be presented Saturday, November 3, at the Silver Star Salute during the International Quilt Festival in Houston.
