Needlearts and Reading

Posted by: BillGardner | March 27, 2008

The National Needlearts Association is supporting member efforts to bring together needlework and reading. Jen Funk Weber, co-owner of Funk & Weber Designs in Sutton, Alaska, has issued the 2008 Bookmark Challenge through her program, Needle and ThREAD: Stitching for Literacy. Funk Weber encourages independent needlework shops to collect hand-stitched bookmarks from their customers through May 8. The bookmarks can then be donated to local libraries and schools in their respective markets as rewards for children’s reading accomplishments during Children’s Book Week, May 12-18. In addition to collecting bookmarks, the Needle and ThREAD program raises money for literacy projects. Independent designers donate 10 percent of profits from bookmark patterns bearing a Needle and ThREAD logo. Patterns are currently available from Funk & Weber Designs, My Mark Designs, and Rosewood Manor. For more information, contact Funk Weber at 907/746-5641 or visit http://JenFunkWeber.com for the online Bookmark Challenge Kit.
